The Alexandra Hall. Opened in 1931. Owned by the Halifax Building Society whose HQ building was adjacent. They used the hall for their meetings but it was also a public hall with theatrical performances and regular dances. The basement was carved out of solid rock and became the building society's storage vaults for their documents. The building also included a cafe & restaurant. The building is still standing but is not open to the public being part of the building society's local complex (now part of Lloyd's Banking Group). but on research the Lloyds group have left and now its empty have a look at these photo's.

Nice first report there. Just one thing, the thread title needs formatting correctly; it should include the site name, general area (town/city, etc) and the month and year of the visit. Cheers

Nice. I did some work there in the late 1990s and explored behind the scenes, it looks pretty much the same minus the desks. There are crawlways above the stage just about viewable in some of the shots which were my first explore before I worked out what facilities keys unlocked the right doors. It looks like the big Grand Master is still in the wings, it was the first one Strand Electric made. The Halifax Playhouse (amateur theatre) were going to put it in their foyers as a kinetic sculpture but the practicalities of removing it stymied the project due to lots of air conditioner outdoor units in the way of the dock door.

I don’t think photos 2 - 5 are actually of the Alexandra Hall, although of somewhere of similar scale. There was a small balcony and a Cafe on the floor above which rules out Laylights.

Have done this tour today, the building interior is just the same now.... and now up for sale. Hopefully the new buyer will preserve all these historical features.
Photo 1 is definitely and old photo of the Alexander Hall in its former use. Pcs 2, 3, 4 probably not (agreed by the fact that there is a further upstairs floor), Pic 5 is of the Halifax YMCA which still looks the same today.

Having worked for the parent company for 40+ years Halifax became my area for a few years in the mid 2010’s. although I never bothered to review it, I was told there was access from the Commercial Street premises which led to the stage of the Alexandra Hall, that still being in 2011/12 and whilst that no doubt has been sealed up now it’s interesting to learn what i had literally on my doorstep.
