Sitting lonely on a banked field surrounded by miles of rolling countryside is this WW2 Allan-Williams Gun Turret. It sits not too far from the ROC Post i reported on yesterday and also lies close to the former RAF Harlaxton. I have never come across one of these before nor never knew they existed! I thought I'd stumbled across something unique but turns out there were actually 199 of these built! I have the facts and figures here:
Pre-fabricated defence structure built of steel.
Single-man operation.
Designed to allow top part of turret to rotate through 360 degrees for all round field of fire.
199 Turrets ordered and built.
64 allotted to 2 Corps.
116 allotted to 11 Corps.
Designed to be used for all types of light weapons: Bren, Lewis, Boys, Hotchkiss & Browning.
So yea not too much else to say other than a cool explore and now I know there are a fair few of them, I'll be scouting them out! Here's the pics enjoy.
Also found this nearby which i believe is the old filtration system for RAF Harlaxton
Thanks For Looking.
