This was my first trip out and after a failed attempt elsewhere we decided to go and have a look at what was left of the old american adventure theme park. Unfortunately there was almost nothing left bar the foundations or rides and buildings.

This is the map of the park from 1997 we only managed to get to the bottom left portion and were heading towards the railway and island when we got escorted out of the park by a surveyor due to the unsafe nature of the area.

History

The american adventure was built on what was originally an opencast coal mine. The doors opened to the Cowboy's and Indian's Themed park in June of 1987 and was heralded as Britain's Major New Theme Park. Over the next few years up until 1997 the park started to expanded into what you can see in the map above from this point onward though the park began to decline and in that year the park was sold to a new owner. In 1999 the park fell further into decline with the closer of many small rides and down sizing in the park entrance. 2005 saw the closing of many major rides for varying reasons but this also helped the park portray the new family theme this. With the park clearly struggling in the 2006 season various investments where introduced to the park but it was too little too late and this was to be the last season the park would open.

Since the closer in 2007 there have been lots of urban explorers that have investigated the area and you can go through and see the decline of what was remaining of the park. Until recently the pier was still standing but unfortunately it has since been burned down. Now all that remains is some of the foundations paths and staircases that once made up the park but i will let the pictures do the rest of the talking.

Not much left there as you say. That headstock looks interesting though. Did you have a look?

I'm assuming this is what you mean? this is as close as we got. Tried to get closer on the other side but we were being escorted off before we had a chance to get any closer so didn't get to check
it out

Not that I'm an expert on Urbex but that was a great little stroll :) It's a shame the place was (a) closed and (b) vandalized! Maybe you shoulda asked the (presumably) guy who escorted you out to show you around, so avoiding the dangers :) As an ex angler those lakes intrigue me, gotta be some fish in there, has anyone fished it?

He wouldn't we asked if there was anyway we could stay and have a look around with him but he was under orders from the person who owns the land to escort people off. I like to fish now and again so i asked him about that and he says thats one of the ideas for the redevelopment of the land. Its wither going to be house which unfortunately seems to be the way with most plots of land like this or its going to be a nature reserve with some fishing pegs in the middle. apparently there is a 2 and half foot white goldfish in there.

The reason we got escorted of is due to large sinkholes (up to 30m deep and full of water) opening up around the park where the mine shafts bellow have begun to cave in.

I remember this place as a kid, bet half the rides are at Twin Lakes in Melton Mowbray now. The Log flume was fun here. Shame it's all gone now, would've made a good explore ;)
Good to see you're getting out there :thumb
How were secca with you?

I used to go as a kid as well its weird seeing all the paths that would have had thousands of people walk along them and now it was just us! I know for a fact the buffalo stamped roller coaster moved to twinlakes as i went there with my brother when he was younger. Yeah i was looking at older pictures and would of loved to have seen it before it was gone! I think you can still find parts of the rapids round the other side but unfortunately we couldn't get round.

He was fine really nice guy would wait for us to take photos while escorting us out. The photos of the stairs, phone and foundations were all taken on the way out. I'm guessing not all secca are that nice.

100 foot deep sinkholes are a damned good reason to keep away :) Thanks for the reply...That white goldfish would be a nice catch. Hope they secure those holes before they start building there:)

Yeah we didn't realize at first was just told. Its okay man will always reply if i can. There was a guy there working on sorting it out so they could build on the area thats why secca was there. With such an old and empty site they are barely ever there anymore there is nothing to protect. They are only there at the moment because they have had problems with people damaging the workers trucks.
