Report - Anglo Beef Processors

A few weeks back, I and a friend visited the Angle Beef processing plant, after reading about it. I had visited before, but had pussied out, as it was late at night, and I was afraid the spirits of the dead cows would be haunting the place. But late one night, I entered, and saw first hand the *business end* of the beef industry. The morbidness of the place was definitely enhanced by the state of decay, and the fact it was late at night, I hope you enjoy the following pictures.

Not bad, but why so late at night? It’s much more relaxed in the day time. Really easy place to explore, nice and chilled in the daytime. Can’t imagine it wasn’t much fun in the dark?

I used to work here back in the 70's, 80's and 90's. This abbatoir was a very important employer at that time. Generations of the same family would work there, I myself had four family members working at the plant. I starte d out making sausage meat but was recruited into the slaughter gang. We would kill 500-1000 cattle, 1000 pigs and 1000 lambs (although the lamb kill moved to the Wellingboro site. It's sad for me to see it like this because I remember it as a busy and vibrant workplace. Being a slaughterman wasn't easy, but we as a nation eat meat, it's a fact. I can say that there were 4 resident vets, and 15 meat inspectors watching our every move. If you were seen doing anything wrong your licence could be revoked... no licence, no job. It was as humane as it can be. We were very proficient at our job and the suffering of the animals was always kept to a minimum. This plant serviced Tesco, Sainsbury, Waitrose, Budgen, Co-op, Carrefour (French supermarket).

You're right, it was just a last minute spontaneous decision to go and we need something to do.

We saw hundreds and hundreds of vetinary reports and inspectors reports. One question though, the sheds at the back of the plant did not look capable of housing 1000 cattle? Unless there where more sheds somewhere, or they where brought in off-site and slaughtered straight away?

They would come in during the kill, we would have 3 - 400 on site, then take straight from intake. We would do more Thursday if available, so Friday kill would be lower. So start at 6.00am, done and dusted by 10.00am.
