Men in the Auxiliary Unit were expected to last for about two weeks before they were either captured or killed. In that time they were expected to do what they could to disrupt the supply lines of the Germans by blowing up bridges, rail lines, air strips etc.
Today was mostly spent searching out two Auxiliary unit operational bases in the area of Swineshead Lincs. The area where the first one was supposed to be was right in the middle of nowhere and took some getting to. I searched but no evidence was found.
The second one also took a bit of getting to, but after a search of the area I stumbled almost by accident on this little hatch.
Im sure it will get more difficult to find as the grass starts to grow. You almost have to be on top of it to find it now.
The vent was only just visable.
Inside showed signs of quite a lot of use, including the remnants of a recent fire.
View from the bottom of the shaft toward the rear of the shelter. (The escape/entry tunnel is at the rear left and exits at 45 degrees to the main chamber)
View from the back, toward the hatch
Down the escape/entry tunnel
