Big Butts, Rochdale
Explored with Kenni and ViralEye
The River Roch has been culverted in Rochdale town centre since the early 20th century. This was built by the joining together of seven bridges (including a 14th century medieval bridge) to form one large bridge in stages between 1905 and 1928, making it one of the widest bridges in the world.
A planning application has been submitted to Rochdale council to uncover three sections of the river and conservation of the medieval bridge.
In the 1990s the river was uncovered during maintenance works...
Getting into the river at the wrong place made for comedy spuds deep welly fail for Kenni, made even worse by the fact the water was only a few inches deep at the other end Our original entry point was to be off a car park that was spotted on google maps but on getting there turned out to be a building site (oops!)
