A very brief history...
Originally built in 1904 as a boys boarding school it was taken over in 1948 by the Liverpool School for the Deaf. The name was later changed to the Birkdale School for the Hearing Impared Children. It was eventually closed in 2003 and has been empty since. One end of the building was partially demolished after an inevitable fire in 2010.
All of my pics are taken in the most recent addition buildings to the site as the original Victorian building was unaccessable on the day of my visit.
The explore
I knew I had a weekend away in Southport with work, so beforehand I had done some homework on where to visit and this place kept cropping up.
Early on the Saturday morning, and quite hungover, I set off across a random northern town to find this school.
It was all to easy to find, and with an even easier way around some heras fencing and through a window I found myself in something that quite reminded me of my own primary school... The highlight of which being the school hall with climbing bars included.
The only downside being not getting into the original building but it was well locked up and I really wasn't in a position to get arrested as I needed to drive a bus load of people back down South the next day lol.
I hope the few pics I took do the place justice, if I'm ever back in the area I'll absolutely be having a re-visit!!!
