Birkhill Fire Clay mine sits between 2-3 Miles to the East of Grangemouth and 2 Miles southwest of Bo-Ness.
Fire Clay deposits have been mined on this site since the 18th century and were famed for their high alumina deposits which made heat resisting bricks for industry.
The buildings present today, were built by M. Hurll Ltd in 1908, a fire brick manufacturer based at Glenboig. In 1908 the area was rented from the Hamilton Estates, but in 1916, the land was bought.
The mine was worked until 1980, with production peaking in the 1950's.
At present, the buildings are being left to rot as tours of the mine take place from April to October, a great shame in my opinion. Had a look down the hill to see of any of the Adits were open, but they were all locked up tight.
A lot has been left in situ, the mine carts were good
