Report - Brooklands air raid shelter, weybridge - 030209

What a bit of luck this was.
Impromptu visit this evening.

This is the vickers - armstrong shelter built into the cliff by the health club. I'm sure theres another bunker under the racetrack?

"a huge underground air raid shelter had been built tunneling into the side of a disused sand quarry adjacent to the works. This consisted of 17 parallel tunnels burrowed into the hillside. Each tunnel had its own entrance in the quarry face with a 50 foot doglegged access tunnel incorporating an airlock leading to the 180 foot long shelter tunnels. Further shelter space was provided with three cross tunnels linking the main 17 shelter tunnels."

This is a large system of tunnels which are all very uniform and kind of boring at first, but theres a lot of relics and stuff from the war if you look around.

We turned up to find the entrance and someone has hacked the hasp right off the wall with the padlock still on it.

Don't know how long its gonna stay open but was glad to get it done
