HISTORY- in 2010 irwell st police station was closed down and everybody moved to a state of the art £16m grey tin looking oversized shed 300yds away , greater manchester police is the fourth largest force in the uk and claim that it was done as a cost saving alternative to refurbishing the old station . they are probably correct as it is cheaper to build from new than modernise the old .
a spokesman for greater manchester police has said " WE RECOMMEND THAT THE PUBLIC DO NOT ENTER CONDEMNED BUILDINGS ".......and " WE WILL ARREST AND DETAIN ANYONE WHO IS CAUGHT BREAKING AND ENTERING "
THE VISIT - after ignoring the above advice i cautiously entered the premises a few days before on a recce to see if i could gain entry and navigate the premises without having my collar felt by the local rozzers or the council security team who i was more wary of at the time ! i had heard of motion sensors inside the police station that had been triggered by fellow members and thought to myself that if i do trigger them that i would scarper sharpish and await for secca to turn up so i could time there response from a safe distance , luckily on my visits i never encountered any after covering the site in a thorough cautious manner.
i visited with fellow member @Cazel#HT who is my trusty sidekick on these urban adventures , we entered during the day as we did,nt want local people seeing our torches flashing about while walking round the glass blocks during the night and phoning the local police station 300yds away .
we covered the entire site thoroughly , and entered both tower blocks , we found underground car parks , kennels, massive elevator , small bore firing range , armoury , flooded basement , interview rooms , cells , evidence lockup ,medical facilities , snooker room and a basketball court . (basement is flooded with oil n water to a depth of 3-4ft )
the place is pretty empty but is good to get an insight of the varied facilities and layout of a modern police station , we really enjoyed this site , we had to see it before demolition begins in january 2016 , highlight of the visit was having a safety brew on the balcony of the office block while watching a police van pulling over motorists , while we happily chomped on mars bar washed down with lashings of milky coffee and co
ngratulating ourselves on yet another successful urban explore .
