Cains brewery was founded in 1858 by Robert Cain,
the company merged with Peter Walker & Son in 1921 to form Walker Cain's.
Walker Cain's sold the brewery to Higson's in 1923 & then Boddington's in 1985,
Whitbread acquired Boddington's brewing operations in 1990 and closed the brewery.
It was reopened by GB Breweries, which became part of Bryggerigruppen in 1991
it was sold to Gardener Shaw for £3.4 million in 2002 & closed in 2013 with debts exceeding £8 million.
In 2013 Cains began a redevelopment of the site with a craft brewery continuing production of its ales,
in 2014 Cains arranged for quantities of its beers to be brewed for export and sale in it estate
brewing stopped in 2023 because of a dispute between the owners of the cain's brand & the brewery operators.
The Cain's brewery site now comprises bars, ( inc the original Brewery Tap) food markets & live entertainment
there's plans for the conversion of the remaining site (which currently lies empty) to a hotel.
