After faffing around (and failing) to find a 'the hole' for access to a certain well-known Manicomio nearby, I was feeling a bit down on my luck. I had also been wandering around trying to find some potential entry here, including peeping through a hole in a gate and at the very same moment seeing someone in an adjoining house coming to the window for a look out. I decided to take one final stroll around the quiet streets of a the historic village in the pleasantly warm January afternoon and suddenly a lightbulb moment. I was rewarded with what is for me the ideal kind of place - a mixture of grandeur and decay. Add to that the amazing light that you get in Italy and I was one happy camper.
History: the castle is 15th century, with parts in the gothic style, however these walls rest on an even older structure. There is also still part of the original moat which also provided a constant supply of fresh water. It had been the private residence of a noble family for a very long time but I'm guessing we're talking decades since it was last lived in.
