The History:
Chatterley Whitfield Colliery is a disused coal mine on the outskirts of Chell, Staffordshire in Stoke on Trent, England. It was the largest mine working the North Staffordshire Coalfieldand was the first colliery in the UK to produce one million tons of saleable coal in a year.
The colliery and pithead baths complex are on Historic England's Heritage at Risk Registerdue to being in very bad condition and not in use. In September 2019, it was named on the Victorian Society's list of the top ten most endangered buildings in England and Wales.
The explore:
I was kindly shown around by a friend who has visited the site before, we managed to make it around a few of the buildings and what beautiful place this is the 19th century buildings make it easy to see how this would have looked in its hay-day.
A view of the Platt Shaft, Institute Shaft & Headgears from Hesketh Heapstead
Some shots from the main tub hall.
Inside Hesketh Heapstead.
A view of the Chimney and Platt Winding House.
A few shots of the machinery inside Hesketh Winding House.
View of the Baths & Canteen from Hesketh Winding House.
Some shots of the outside of(and in my opinion the best looking structure on site)
Winstanley Headgear and a control room inside.
A view of most of the site from the West.
