Report - Chatterley Whitfield mining museum June 2019 volume one

The surface buildings have, with a few exceptions, all been explored _ most recently in August last year. Whilst all of the shafts have been capped I got to thinking that there might be some of the mining experience left to find.... The part that ran from 1986 to 1993.
Whilst most was constructed on the site of the standard gauge rail sidings and have been removed I hoped that there was something left.
And so...

Access is via the Old ventilation drift. The original drift is in excellent condition but the museum was constructed inside the brick (old) and concrete (new) drifts.. Raised wooden floors and lots of corrugated tin sheets and timber rooves. Some parts are literally rotten.

It's fresh air and pretty dry. The water table is below floor level.

Such a shame this is all just left to rot, their own instagram page is worth a follow and has actually posted pics of the drift gallery recently, good to see its still there.

When I did one of the open days a few years back the guide started off with ... "we have had to use most of our money on fences to keep 28 days later climbers out"

I've just caught this... amazing. The photography is a bit to be desired but as others have said we had no idea there was anything like this left so I tip my hat to you for getting in there!

Thanks guys. The fence is a couple of miles long and set into concrete and certainly wasn't financed by the friends of Chatterley. Fortunately there's a gap...
