An abandoned graveyard, now filled with the living. The City of the Dead in Cairo, also known as Al-Qarafa or El Arafa, is a large necropolis stretching over 6.4 km in Historic Cairo. It dates back to the 7th century and contains cemeteries, mausoleums, and medieval Islamic architecture. Despite its name, it is also home to a living population, with many residents inhabiting tombs and mausoleums due to Cairo's housing crisis.
It was difficult to take photos as we didn't want to offend and we stood out like a saw thumb. It would have been great to have rooted around to find the actually graves in the now highly developed areas, but we were not up for it.
