This shelter is one of three deep level air raid shelters in this area, which were dug into the red sandstone on which the town centre stands on. The smallest of the tunnel shelters could accommodate 2,000 civilians and the largest 6,500 civilians. The shelters were constructed in 1938 and 1939. This area was bombed for the first time on 11 October 1940
