The connecting ditch to the eastern outwork runs approximately south east from the eastern gorge of Fort Burgoyne (formerly known as Castle Hill Fort). A small two gun battery overlooked it. This battery is also a parallelogram with its longer sides running to the south. The central parade is divided into three open sections by two small traverses. The entrance bridge was at the southern end of the west side. It has not survived. A passage runs through the southern traverse with a small room on the left and a passage on the right running down to the level of the ditch. Unexpectedly there is no caponier at its end, as was first planned. Instead the counterscarp has been cut away to allow the ditch to be flanked from Dover Castle. A passage in the northern traverse leads to the two magazine chambers, with a lighting passage. Another passage parallel to the first leads right through the traverse to the northern parapet of the outwork, with a cross passage. From here guns could fire across the interval between Fort Burgoyne to the west and Dover Castle to the east.

This explore of the eastern outworks was a return visit after a few years since I initially stumbled across it. Everything was pretty much still in the same condition with evidence of either another exploring or perhaps a homeless chap skipping down for the night there. This time I walked fully round the ditch line and up to the main road, and surprisingly found a connecting tunnel which leads to the old Connaught Barracks section. The volume of dumped barbed wire (from WW2)in the ditch is ridiculous and at times you think your walking on mud and leaves but it's actually covered rusty old barbed wire. Not the biggest of locations but well worth a look.

Might consider going back for a wild camp nearer the summer time

Oh that’s a shameXD. It was really random and funny to see last time I went. Good to see it’s still in decent condition though
