Eastmoor Reformatory dates right back to the days of 1857 which is when it first housed workhouse children who had fallen into crime and the campus to this very same day has the same church within the grounds as well as the swimming pool and a on-site dentist.
Eastmoor later turned into a borstal where 160 children were taught practical trades that would prepare themselves for the world of adulthood.
In 1972 the Borstal closed its doors. Up until around 1993 it was used as a community home and then from the 90’s a student accommodation for the Leeds Metropolitan University before mysteriously becoming completely abandoned in 2004.
The Explore
Obtaining entry is always the hardest part and I can say it is the most awkward place to gain access with the new building just across the road with many workers onlooking however a few jumps and we’re over and in.
Unfortunately little remains of anything at all linked to its former life apart from the odd sign and the swimming pool most of the rooms lay bare stripped out or wrecked with a flock of pigeons in the roof ready to fly out at any second.
We started by covering the ground floor first most of the rooms lay wrecked and the signs of heavy vandalism. Nothing but wreckage amongst more wreckage. The swimming pool was next. I wasn’t too sure what was in the water but it didn’t seem healthy for human consumption.
The top floor was very much the same apart from the only difference being the floor was very unstable at times at one point my foot nearly went through the roof as I manage to make my way through all the rooms we decide to make a swift exit before it gets dark.
