The main hospital block dates to 1820 with key phases of extension in 1839 and 1879. The kitchen wing was added between 1876-1897 and the nurses’ accommodation in 1898 (extended in the 1930s).
As typical of such sites, structures have been added to and the buildings extended over the years to meet the requirements of its operational use. This may be seen in the 1960s structures of the Outpatient’s extension and Radiography buildings which are pretty crap architecutrally!
The site is still partially in use as a hospital until all departments transfer to the Colchester General Hospital late 2018-early 2019.
