History

Eye Brook Reservoir was built between 1937 and 1940, the reservoir itself is two miles
south of Uppingham, and lies on the boundary between Leicestershire and Rutland.

The reservoir is 500 acres with 383.3 acres of open water and also canals,
it has been a trout fishery since 1942 and is a nature reserve for many species of
birds and wildlife. This also includes conservation and preservation of the wildlife, birds,
and the reservoir itself, and scientists to carry out research in order to achieve this.

Eye Brook was built by Stewarts & Lloyds in order to supply water to Corby Steel Works. This was
whilst under the supervision of Geoffrey Binnie of Binnie & Partners, this is now part of Tata Steel,
that was Corus.

In May 1943 during the Second World War, the Eyebrook was used for low level practice by Lancaster bombers of 617 squadron, as final practice prior to the raids on the German dams. This was standing in for the Mohne Reservoir, a plaque has been put in place in memory of this.
