Fawley Powerstation Control Room - August 2021
The Explore
Another year and another backlog of explores I have failed to keep on top of lol! 2021 has been a year of quality more than quantity for me; though I have done my fair share of derps this year as well… This is not one of them, a beautiful one which is REALLY me!
Explored with @Dragon_Urbex and another explorer friend back in August this year during an exploring weekender; but what a beautiful site to see.
Once on site; we made our way to the access point as quietly as could be. After a bit of a moment of awe as we went in through the door into the control room, we composed ourselves and got shooting.
It was a nice and relaxed morning, but we did have a moment where we heard someone; I hid inside a control panel, backpack on back. Tight for a man of my build!
It’s a shame that we totally missed the boat on the Power Station itself; but it was nice to see it before the chimney went.
History
Mitchell Construction Architect Colin Morse RIBA for the CEGB; built Fawley between 1965 and 1969. In 1971; it was commissioned in as a 2,000-megawatt (MW) power station, with 4 500 MW generating units. Each of these consisted of a boiler supplying steam to a turbine that powered an associated generator.
These boilers were capable of delivering 1788.0 kg/s of steam at 158.6 bar and 538°C. The cooling pumps at Fawley were Britain's largest with a flow of 210,000 GPM. One of them was driven by an experimental super-conducting electric motor.
By the 18th September 2012, it was announced that Fawley would be shutting by the end of March 2013. Sadly; the power station was shut on 31 March 2013 after more than 40 years in operation. The main admin block where the control room is situated is an indistinguishable domed structure that sits toward the estuary side of the station.
This block was completed in 1968; some three years after construction of the station started
