This former water treatment works is located near the village of Glassford, just outside Strathhaven in Lanarkshire. Unfortunately very little information is available about it in the public domain but we reckon it was built in the 1980s and ceased operation around 10 years ago, having been replaced with a modern, automated treatment works nearby. The former works is mostly within one building containing the filtration tanks, pumps, chemical storage vessels, control room, crew facilities and laboratory. A smaller, separate sludge press house building is located behind this but unfortunately it was not accessible. There were also the remains of some external tanks within the compound. Clearly the metal fairies had been very busy in this place as a huge amount of materials had been stripped, including sections of the internal metal stairways, which made navigating to the upper levels rather interesting! Sadly vandals had also left their mark in places but there were still plenty of good bits to see. We spent a lot longer than expected exploring this due to the complex layout of the place. It was quite educational thanks to the large diagram in the reception area which showed the workings of the plant, suggesting that it was occasionally opened to visitors in the past.
This was a summer explore last year and at the time it was being marketed for sale as a development opportunity. We expect it will eventually be demolished and the land used for housing, because it is unlikely the buildings will be particularly adaptable for any alternative use.
