An interesting walk along the abandoned North British Glenfarg railway line. This line ran South from Perth to the Forth Railway Bridge. The actual Glenfarg section was from Mawcarse Junction to Bridge of Earn via Glenfarg. The line closed on the 5th January 1970, 6 years after Glenfarg Station closed. Folk tend to think that this line was closed by Beeching, but it is not on his list and it is thought the proposed route of the nearby M90, some of it on the railway line, was probably to blame for the closure.
There's 2 tunnels each about 500m long and a nice viaduct. There's wee bits and pieces along the way, great views between the tunnels and a major swamp at this time of year to keep you amused.
It a great first tunnel visit as access is no issue and its always quiet. As they are safe tunnels, mostly clear, you don't necessarily need any expensive powerfull torches, but you'll need something as its pitch black in the middle!
Its a good place to learn how to light dark places for photos.
We prefer to walk it from the North Tunnel (this is marked Pottiehill on map) to South Tunnel (this is the one with the viaduct over the River Farg). There's some interesting disused farm buildings at Kilknockiebank if you walk in from the Pottiehill end.
North tunnel entrance
Pottiehill -Brick lined tunnel with refuges
exiting Pottiehill
well engineered culvert
high bridge over cutting
Glenfarg Tunnel is concrete lined
car wreck at the Viaduct end of Glenfarg
viaduct
looking along the viaduct to the start of Glenfarg tunnel
