I'd read about an abnormally large sewer pipe (for Bolton's system) so went for a look with TheVicar. After dropping down a couple of landings we found ourselves at the downstream end of a 2.1m tall, 300m long storage tunnel. All manner of crap had washed down to this end and produced a winter wonderland of filth.
Further upstream the tunnel became clearer, after a few large manhole shafts we came to the end.
A small sewer entered from a dropshaft and there was an overflow higher up for when the tunnel backfills (due to a very small throttle pipe) which goes straight to Bolton's outfall sewer.
