The guide hall was opened in 1888 as a magistrates court & police station,
replacing a former guide hall on Weekday Cross.
Designed by Thomas Verity & George Henrey Hunt,
built by Gabbutts of Liverpool at a cost of £65 000.
The walls are built of Darley Dale ashlar & brick, the roof is built of westmorland slate
with a french renaissance design.
The building consists of a foyer, with stairs at each side, 5 courts (courts 1 & 2 with panneling)
reception, offices, meeting rooms & cells beneath with stairs accessing courts 1 & 2
the magistrates court closed in 1996 & the building was used by the council until 2010.
The building is grade 2 listed,
with current plans for the conversion to a hotel.
