Whilst studying photography in Norwich for three years I visited Hales Asylum about 6 times. Each time finding something new to document. The latest of these visits was in January 2013.
I first visited this location in September 2012 with NorfolkExplorer and a few other people I have yet to come across on here. After that I was hooked.

In 1927, the workhouse was closed and the building converted into an institution for “mental defectivesâ€. After 1930, control passed to Norfolk County Council and the establishment was renamed Heckingham Institution. In 1948, it became part of the National Health Service as Hales Hospital which closed in around 1990.
