My first visit here ended promptly in March after German Shepherd and his trusty cycle caught me scuttling around in the bushes, damn. Fast forward a month or two and here we are, deja vu, with larger company and a more awkward access we were in, lets party...
Located on a 175 acre site in Castleford, West Yorkshire, Hickson & Welch was an organic fine chemicals producer and contract manufacturer focused on agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, pigments, explosives and detergents. During the 90's a huge explosion killed 5 workers which ultimately led to the slow death of this site. The Hickson & Welch site was sold in 2003 to a Private equity company who promised to keep the plant open and assured unions there would be no job losses. After the deal was made they sacked all 300 workers, stripped most assets and sold the site to a developer. Demolition is currently underway at a slow but consistent pace.
