HM Prison Noranside was an open prison Housing over 135 category D prisoners, serving time from 18 months to life, the prison and regime are designed to facilitate the prisoners reintegration into society.
Formerly a sanatorium, Noranside became a borstal in 1963 before entering service as an adult prison. It comprises four wings (A to D), together with an independent living unit (Alba and Cameron Houses).
It was closed in 2011 due to fewer prisoners meeting the criteria to be housed in an open prison.
The explore
I ended up visiting here a couple times due to not getting into the gym on the first visit.
My first visit I was very wary of the dogs I knew were there. At one point we all turned to run as we thought the dogs were coming, turns out we were just very close to them and they were behind a fence.
We went directly into the main house, what a place, so beautiful. From there to the cell block, the 2 proper cells made this part totally worth it. Did the workshops last before trying the gym and failing. Thought better of pushing our luck at this point and left. Second visit got the gym though.
My son visited this place a while after me and spoke to the groundskeeper/security, It has now been sold to a Christian group and they are planning turning it into a retreat.
Cheers to Brewtal for your tips on this one.
P.s sorry if this is pic heavy. It’s such a big place and really hard to pick just some
