John Smedley East Mill, Matlock, Derbyshire - July 2024

‘John Smedley ltd has been producing textiles in a quiet corner of rural Derbyshire for the last 237 years. Originally established as a cotton mill, but a wool spinning mill for most of its history, John Smedley can claim to be the oldest continuously manufacturing factory in the world, and is the last surviving working textile mill in the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site.’

Thought this might be good but it just turned out to be a soft-stripped shell with a bricked-up bridge over the road to the live part of the works. I think Smedleys claim to fame was inventing ‘Long Johns’ which you can still buy today. Did I mention Smedleys garments are unbelievably expensive? Not that I doubt their quality, but £380 for a plain hoodie is pretty eye-watering.

The bridge was the best bit obvz
