Leeds general infirmary is a teaching & training hospital, part of the Leeds hospitals nhs trust.
Originally opened in 1771 on the site of the former Yorkshire bank,
while the current site opened in 1869 designed by George Gilbert Scott.
The construction commenced in 1863 & the completion in 1868, officially opened in 1869 by prince Albert
with extensions between 1891 & 1892 by George Corson.
Deals with all types of care inc accident, emergency & major trauma with a capacity of 1103.
The following wings opened in stages Brotherton 1940, Martin & Wellcome 1960, Worsley 1979,
Clarendon 1984 & Jubilee 1998, all currently in use.
Leeds general infirmary & St James are the 2 main hospitals in Leeds.
The nurses home opened in 1897 designed by W H Thorp,
with north & east, (Sunnybank wing) extensions which opened in 1937 designed by Sidney Kitson.
The nurses home closed in 2015 - 2016.
The current plans are for the demo of the nurses home, (which aren’t grade listed)
then a new hospital wing for adults & children’s services to be built on the land.
