After alittle bit of a let down down the road at Wakefield then struck it lucky with another site that way on, we all made our way up to these beautiful buildings which stand of the main road, Im sure ive passed them before whilst driving around and didnt take much notice until they appeared on here. After a quiet recce with some other "on lookers" we returned back after a meal break and made ways

history
Ledston pit was opened around the 1870's which later on in its life was turned into the Selby super pits which mainly supplied coal to the 3 local power stations (Drax, Eggborough and Ferrybridge). At the hit of the super pits, the coal Board (NCB) annonced they were to shed over 20,000 jobs in the coming year and Ledston was one of the few coal mines which serviced the miners strike in the 1980's. The two winding houses were built in 1911 and was one of the first to house the electric winders in the country. The pit was closed in 1986 when soon after they removed the winder machinery but left the houses to stand.
