Maxpoffle Sawmill
History is sparse on this one, I've included as much as I was able to find.
Maxpoffle Sawmill is situated next to Bowden Burn. Constructed in the early 19th century apparently from the rubble of old nearby buildings, with slate used for the roof. It contains an impressive 10' diameter overshot water wheel which is separated from the main body of the mill by a wall.
Bowden Burn was tapped into and a 200 yard long stone lade and dam was constructed to feed the water into the mill and power the wheel. This can be seen on the OS maps screen grab which I've included. Inside there is a long saw bench including rollers, the saw blade itself also remains. The building was 'Category B' listed in October 1985.
It's a shame the roof has collapsed, I did manage to find a photo from around 2011 which shows the sawmill in much better condition than it is now. It looked stunning, I'm gutted it doesn't look like that anymore!
Here's the sawmill as shown on OS 25 inch 1892-1914. You can see the mill underlined in red, and the long lade with the dam marked in blue.
