Point Nepean’s first use was to mine limestone, with two lime kilns being constructed around 1840. Point Nepean is also home to Australia’s second oldest quarantine station.
Being that between Point Nepean and Point Lonsdale is the gateway to Port Phillip Bay, and therefore the city of Melbourne, fortifications were erected from 1878 in order to protect Melbourne from its enemies. Gun batteries were also installed from 1886. After WW2, all the artillery along the coastline was removed and the facilities were used to house both the Army Officer Cadet School and the School of Army Health, which remained in use up until 1985.
In 1988, Point Nepean was opened to the public as a national park.
Although a national park, not the entire area is open to public access. The following gallery is a mixture of both the open to the public areas and the off- limit areas.
We passed through the checkpoint, paid our entry fee and made the 3.5 kilometre walk down to the old forts, whilst the open tunnels and history information is quite good to see, we made our way off the track in search of the overgrown, forgotten structures…
