Gray Cancer Institute, Mount Vernon Hospital, Northwood - June 2023
Another one from a few months ago; it was kind of summer, as much as you can call Summer 2023 “summer”. I had just done Debenham House in Chalfont and had a spare few hours solo. I drove over to Wilton Park Tower which I had done before, got to the fence; then decided I’d done it a number of times so I would find something else in the error.
I saw @mookster had recently been here, so I headed there myself to have a good crack at it. It turned out to be pretty good inside all told (some nice decay) but some pretty nasty, mould ridden air in places. The Ground Floor also smelt of Natural Gas.
The Gray Cancer Institute is part of the still very much active site of Mount Vernon Hospital in Northwood, North West London; and is steeped in history. I later spoke to my mother and found she had worked in the hospital sometime in the late 1970s.
I’ve borrowed and added to/removed a small part of @mookster ‘s history.
The Gray Cancer Institute was mostly involved with research surrounding the 'oxygen effect' on the radiosensitivity of tumours. The building was home to a one of a kind “4 MeV heavy ion Van De Graff Accelerator”. Try saying that after a session of drinks.
In 2006 it became a completely owned subsidiary of Oxford University and in 2008/9 it was relocated to a new facility in Oxford; and subsequently renamed “The Oxford Institute for Radiation Oncology”. Also; try saying that after a drink!
Since closing; it has been heavily fortified with steel grates over every window and door on every floor, and appears to have been completely forgotten about. The Grade II* listed Hospital Chapel nextdoor was built in 1905 in an “Arts and Crafts Style”; and is located next to the laboratory. Back in 1988 it was converted into the “Fowler Scott Cancer Research Library”, before being turned into the lecture theatre for the Gray Cancer Institute, it too has been sat vacant since closure, however is well secured and no obvious way in.
