Nazareth House (Milton Hall) : Southend-on-Sea

"Milton Hall, which is now known as 'Nazareth House', was formerly the manor house of the Manor of Milton and owned by the Priory of Holy Trinity, Canterbury.

The Manor was undoubtedly held by the Priory in pre-Norman times.

A confirmation charter of Edward the Confessor contains this emphatic curse: “If anyone shall here after presume to alter the same let him be forever anathematized and damned with the traitor Judas."

In the reign of Henry VIII the Manor passed in to the possession of the Rich family, and subsequently into that of the Scrattons. At the sale of the estate in cc1871 the house was purchased for use as a school, but later came into the ownership of the 'Sisters of Nazareth' who kept it as an orphanage and home for the aged and infirm.

The original building has almost entirely vanished, so great have been the additions.

In the crypt of the chappel attached once lie the remains of Mr Clement Scott, author of the once well-known song “The Garden of Sleep,” and Bishop Bellord, awar tried Army Chaplain. It was upon land originally belonging to this estate that the L.M.& S. Station (London, Tilbury and Southend Railway) was built, and the first great section of agricultural land in the parish was utilised for building purposes.
Milton Hall is marked on Norden’s Map of Essex cc1594.

I also explored the whole of the site including the main buildings.
(Which I may add later at some point)

"The former Hospital / Home / School / carehome is now listed as with development potential in a prime City Centre location - the freehold is FOR SALE.

The site area of approx 3.67 acres, with 69,428 sq ft of existing accommodation.

UPDATE

I returned cc2023 and explored the upper floors and attic areas as well as revisiting the Kitchen area and Chappel.

The explore went swimmingly and I managed to capture both video and photographs.

There are still parts of the building that are unexplored only due to them being locked off or inhabited by 'live in security' .. However out of respect we didn't push our luck getting too close to that area and respected the boundary.

I photographed plans for the site .. however they are out of date now and its debatable whether the Chappel will stay or go now since the council is pushing for more residential high story apartments and 'affordable housing' ..

The Council claim its cheaper to demolish all of the building's and rebuild the new housing ... that has now been 'passed' ... however after we took a closer look .. the roof is emaculate and a large amount of the rooms are in great condition .. only aprox fifteen percent is deteriated and with mould etc... the ceiling are only damaged due to lead that has been stolen in the past ( I spoke to the former maintenance man).

As always it comes down to money and profit and not caring for local history nor heritage dating back to cc1830s.

These are 'most' of the photographs I managed to capture (whilst filming).

All in all the explore was a great success.
