First contact was made with extra terrestrial life on March 2nd 1961, just outside New York City. The secret government agency set up to hide this fact from the public at large needed a place to keep the huge landing craft brought to earth by the aliens, and the New York World's Fair Pavilion in Queens turned out to be the perfect setting. The saucers and Unisphere were unfortunately destroyed by Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones in 1997 after a joy-riding Bug alien tried to escape custody of said secret government agency (but must have been painstakingly re-positioned in the years following to avoid any public confusion).
As well as space ships, the Pavilion was also home to 'The Tent Of Tomorrow, a giant concrete tent that once supported the largest cable suspension roof in the world, and sat opposite the 'Unisphere' a giant steel model of the planet Earth. The Tent of Tomorrow
The story of the New York State Fair is a pretty interesting one actually, an embodiment of all that pre 'Nam space-age 60's US optimism which ultimately failed and resulted in the ruins that are still precariously standing there today, and I've wanted to get up close and personal with these since I was a kid at the back of the cinema. Cracking stuff.
