PERMANITE ASPHALT, MATLOCK - SEP 2020
First explore after years off, and having moved down to Nottingham from Liverpool. Chose this one as previous posts indicated it was an easy explore that you can pretty much stroll onto.
Info is pretty thin on the ground for this one so I’ve had to rely on previous explore posts.
In 1989 Permanite Asphalt was incorporated. In 2009 it relocated to Grangemill, becoming known as Ruberoid, which is part of the IKO Group. Companies House website states that they were dissolved in September 2016.
Asphalt products such as roofing sheets and flooring blocks were made here, involving the mixing of sand, aggregate, bitumen, and limestone found in the local quarries. It would all be mixed at around 200’C for about 5 hours. Men would use metal buckets to transfer the mix into moulds; heavy and gruelling work as 25 kilos per full bucket. The work paid good, around three times more than the average wage at the time.
Easy explore, great for easing back into the game. A lot of the building have been fire damaged or flattened; the offices have totally gone by the looks of it. Searched around the grounds first, just taking in the huge shell of the factory, with some pretty neat graffiti. Not a lot of the site is left really and I don’t think it will be too long before it’s collapsed for new development. The top floors are still covered heavy in limestone powder, but the views are worth the dirty shoes!
We walked down towards the new builds to see if there was anything worth while to shoot, but apart from what looks like the old oil shed it was pretty much a mix of old rubble with the new developments in the background, so we did a U-turn and called it a day, and to be fair I was starving and had been craving fish & chips all day!
Whilst searching I came across a snap of how the place looked back in its working days so thought I would chuck that in too! Credit to Spowarta for that one.
