Petzl Duo Z2

Hi Everybody

Looking to get a decent headlamp. I've got a couple of hiking lamps which are OK for a bit of poking about im looking for something more substantial and reliable. I want to join a local caving group hopefully when we come out of all this lockdown mess!

Ive been looking at the petzl duo z2 which is probably about the max I want to spend although it can be used for work not just a hobby.

Anyone got one of these they use for underground exploration? Or could you suggest anything Better?

I would just say before you go out and spend around £120+ Make sure you actually enjoy caving mate I am only saying this because I assume you never have done it caving is very very different from mine exploring and normal exploring , if you have other uses for your light it don’t really matter but don’t want to see you waste your money if your only getting it for caving you could do a beginner caving trip with any head lamp it varies all over the country what it’s like inside the caves due to geology so check your local area for what your going to encounter

Yeah I would be new to caving I have explored a few local mines but only within my limits. There is a local club I have asked to join that goto caves/mines which seemed the best choice for me to do things safely while I learn. I'm sure I wouldn't need the full pro set ups with them on my first outings but I would l still like to get something I could use for a bit of a variety of activities.

One of the online shops suggested a Fenix HM65r or the Shadowmaster version (not sure about the red light) which I could use for hiking, biking and a bit of underground exploration plus its sounds fairly sturdy enough to use it at work too. That sounds like a good choice which is a few levels up from what I have at the moment without going to specialist

I have few Fenix lights, you wont go far wrong with them, seem to be good quality from what I can tell. At least you can take a couple of spare 18650 batteries with the HM65r which you will need for a full day out and maybe use with another spare pocket torch that takes the same batteries as a back up.

its got an Armytek wizard Pro with warm bulb. Definitely the best headtorch I've owned and I would highly recommend it. Has multiple settings for different levels of light output, rechargeable and easily lasts me a day underground on 1 charge. I think mine was around 80quid (approx. 2-3years back) so are probably even less than that now. I believe the max output is 1000lumens but I cant remember for sure. You can order direct from the supplier as I did or you can get them through amazon.

Went with the Fenix HM65r for a bit of all round use. Put it on my helmet and stuck my head in a few old mines and great for walking the dogs at night. Really pleased so far.

I would agree with the comments about caving. In my thirties I was a member of a caving club up in the dales. The other members were fell-runners, and members of the CRO, and they were very, very fit. I was no couch potato, but they could have left me standing. It is exhilarating though, and you get to see some things few members of the public ever see.

I've just joined one of the local Caving clubs. Really looking forwards to be able to get out and learn about it all properly. Ive had a bit of a nose round in some of the local
mines but never out of my depth. Particulary looking forwards to the SRT side of things too

SRT is great, the only problem is that at the end of the day when you're completely knackered, you have to prussic out of all those holes you've abseiled into with ease.

I nearly drowned trying to crawl under a boulder in a stream with all my SRT gear round my waist, but that's another story.
