Day trip over to Portsmouth for the climbing wall so thought we'd head underground for a few hours easy exploring before home..
Portsdown Fuel Depot
The fuel depots were built in the 1930's to provide a back up supply of fuel to the naval shipyards at Gosport should the main supply route be blocked by enemy action.
The bunker consists of 9 large fuel tanks serviced by 2 tunnels running either side of the site.
Southwest adit
The upper pump room, unfortunately a fire has been set near this area and there is alot of smoke damage.
Lower pump room, currently flooded with a layer of furnace oil.
Shaft up to one of the storage tanks
Finally reaching the north entrance.
And a view towards home..
Paulsgrove Chalk Pit Radio Station
During the second world war Fort Southwick was home to the UDHQ. Built underneath the Palmerston fort the UDHQ was network of tunnels acting as a command centre for the army, navy and airforce during operation overlord. To help avoid enemy detection the radio station and its associated masts were located around half a mile away in Paulsgrove chalk pit. The UDHQ is privately owned and used for airsoft games but the radio station is open.
