R.A.F. Bempton started life in February 1940 as R.A.F. Flamborough Head, but later that year was re-named Bempton. It was a GCI station for the remainder of the war years, disbanding on 1st August 1945.
It then had a brief spell as an Air Ministry Experimental Station Type 31 until 1st November 1945 when the station was shut down. It was then allocated to the Northern Signals Area (90 Group) and placed on a care and maintenance basis.
On 1st June 1949, the station was declared operational again as a CHL/CHEL station. On 17th February 1950 it was transferred to Fighter Command, with whom on 1st November 1951, it was re-named as 146 Signals Unit Bempton.

-insert- The site underwent a massive rebuild in the early 50's to provide a new bunker and convert the site into a part of the Rotor Programme.

146 Signals Unit disbanded on 1st December 1961, and the station was re-named R.A.F. Bempton. It soldiered on as such until 1st April 1964 when it was disbanded. Bempton was then reduced to a domestic satellite station of R.A.F. Patrington.
It remained as such until April 1972, when there was no further requirement for the quarters. It was then reduced to redundant station status. Bempton was finally disposed of, some time in 1980/81.

The topside is quite complex and I'm sure with a little work and comparison with other sites all the buildings could be identified.

On to the bunker, sadly burned...

All that's left of the plant room...

The remains of the 'Kelvin Hughes' projection pit (looking unused like Trimingham)...

The main ops room...

Heavy blast doors at the emergency exit end...

Air Pump, still free on it's bearings...

Looong corridor shot complete with ghost...

The site was sold in 1980/81 and is now privately owned. Because of trespass, the stairs down to the bunker were removed and other entrances were sealed over with concrete at the request of the police.
In the 1970s, a satanic cult were known to be practising their rites in the tunnels and open spaces of the former bunker. In 2010, a teenager from Hull went missing after his car was found abandoned by Bempton Cliffs. Police conducted a search for a missing person around the cliff area and inside the former bunker as the teenager had been given a memory stick detailing the pornographic artwork that the cult had painted on the walls of the bunker.
Despite the Humberside Fire and Rescue Service later searching the area again for a body, no trace of Russell Bohling has ever been found.

Just read up on this and that is a very sad story - you have to feel real sorrow for his family because he has not been found i guess there will never be any real closure for them.
