Visited here a few weeks ago, but only posted one pic of the site, so as I sit here with nothing to do, I thought I'd post a few more.

This airfield is located right next to RAF Brize Norton, and opened in November 1943. It was closed soon after in 1947. 512 and 575 Squadron were based there in this period, flying C-47 Dakota'a and Horsa gliders.

Now mostly gone and returned to agriculture - some runways and perimeter tracks remain as well as the Watch tower.

Here's a FlashEarth link
RAF Brize Norton is just to the East

And a link to a plan as it was during operation

Anyway, onto my pics -

Below, one of the few remaining bits of runway

And, looking the opposite way where the surface has been removed

Below - onto the tower, now sitting on its own in the middle of a field.

Below - view from the watch tower balcony. Would have been of a runway, now nothing

And below, a couple of random shots from the site

Thats the lot. Apparently there's a lot more to see to the north of the site (bomb storage area) and there's an Admin block somewhere, but I have no idea where it is (can't see it on Flashearth). :thumb
