RAF Holmpton 5/4/08
Visited with other members of 28DL I will keep this report brief as we all pretty much have similar photos.
It was a superb tour and James Fox was a very informative guide. We were allowed all over the place normally off limits to the ganeral public. He let us jump over chains and go up ladders and crawl under ducting. Anyone who has been on a public tour will recognise some of the areas we were allowed in to and they weren't.
Guardhouse
Even though most of these places were identical whilst under construction most had to be altered due to geographical annomolies.
Plans
As James Fox put it is the main problem is that you have a massive bunker that weighs several hundred tons with 2 little tiny arms comming off it. The main bunker is sat on a gravel and shale shock asorber and as this moves around and expands and contracts the access tunnels crakc and you get water ingress.
Having been to Scotlands Secret bunker whos false floor has been removed this is still intact. Can'r remember what wood it is or the cost per Ft but I was amazed when told.
Nuclear Warhead
Rocket motor used to steer it on re-entry
Orignal air filtration filters (stacked on right)
Fans
Sewarage ejection system
CO's room
Air Ministry bell
Navy, Army and Air force phones
Was an excellent day and will definatly be going back to do the public tour.
Next years tour will be even better as 'Area 7' will be open.....
