Skilts School, Warwickshire - November 2024
Skilts (originally Upper Skilts) is a country house which was originally the home of Sir William Jaffray, and sits near the little village of Mappleborough Green on the border of Warwickshire and Worcestershire. Depending on what you read, the current house was built either in the 1820s or the 1880s.
By 1958 the house had become Skilts Open Air School and could accommodate 45 boys and girls aged 5 - 11. As the name would suggest, open air schools were built to provide open-air therapy, so that fresh air, good ventilation and a rural location away from the city would improve children’s health and combat tuberculosis. Skilts became a special school in its latter years and eventually moved to a new location during 2021.
Had a brief look at this during the summer with the West Midlands lot whilst travelling south but it was obvious it needed a more measured approach that we collectively couldn’t be bothered with at the time. Unfortunately during the intervening months it’s been pretty trashed. Some of the mess has been made by metal thieves who have sprayed pile lagging everywhere. The rest of the trashing appears to have been made by idiots who have taken the time to travel here for the purposes of creating content for social media.
Messy but fancy...
Little sports hall to end on.
