Solomon Joseph Solomon - (September 16, 1860, London - July 27, 1927, Birchington)
Member of the Royal Academy, who painted for the Royal family and whos work is displayed in the Tate Gallery.
During World War I, Solomon was a pioneer of camouflage techniques leading General Sir Douglas Haig, Commander-in-chief of the British forces in France to give Solomon the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel.
Solomon worked on the deveopment of camouflage netting, paint schemes for tanks and the design of armoured observation posts disguised as trees. In December 1916 he established a camouflage school in Hyde Park and in 1920, he published a book on the subject, Strategic Camouflage.

The building is sited on the cliff face in front of the Towers Bungalows private estate, which were some of the first bungalow houses built in Great Britain. It was excavated by the Pre-Rafaelite artist Solomon Joseph Solomon as a cliff top studio in which he painted.
The surrounding area was popular with artists with Turner, Rossetti and Pugin enjoying the seaviews, good light and healthy living.
