South Foreland Deep Shelter
South Foreland Battery occupied a key
position on the White Cliffs between Dover and the village of St. Margaret's. It was built at the beginning of WW2 and consisted of four 9.2" guns on a large site with many auxiliary buildings. The majority of the surface buildings have now been demolished but many underground structures still survive. The magazines for No.1 and No.4 guns were located in underground reinforced concrete rooms; No.2 and No.3 guns were served by buried surface magazines. Two deep underground shelters were built in 1941 and take the form of long parallel tunnels accessed by inclined entrances on the surface, lined with corrugated steel sheeting throughout. Separate underground Fortress and Battery Plotting Rooms also exist on the site, but have been heavily vandalised.

The Explore.
This was my second of the day. South Forelands. Seemed right as St margarets has such a connection to this area, and South Forelands guns helped saved St Margarets during the 1941 war. Having a heavier gun placement. Plotting rooms, and even living quarters. The day still bright and warm. Woodlands nice and quiet. Remote locations scattered around this area. It was a pleasant surprise to find more than one deep shelter here.
First stop. Magazine for guns 2&3
Next was South Foreland deep shelter
Next a brief plotting room
Outside shot of plotting room
Second deep shelter
Thanks for viewing/reading.
We also covered the other gun magazines, the burned out living quarters. What a great explore of this area. 3 gun magazines, plotting rooms, living quarters, and 2 deep shelters.
