St Albans Sanatorium is located in Radford, Virginia right next to the Radford University campus. One of the most creepiest places I have ever explored from the top floor to the basement. Which actually has an bowling alley. St Albans once operated as a boys school and then later a sanatorium for the mentally ill.
In 1892 the school opened but sadly gained a bad reputation for bullying. The school closed in 1911 and reopened in 1916 as a home for the mentally disabled. The newly formed sanatorium was considered advanced at a time when the treatment of the mentally ill was often barbaric and inhumane. However, even this “superior” care included experimental procedures and questionable treatments like Insulin Coma Therapy, Electroconvulsive Therapy and Hydro Shock Therapy. These practices resulted in significant fatalities, alongside multiple documented suicides. St Albans closed its doors for good in the 1990's.
