Visited with Truffle Pig, Team Polski and Chris. St Lawrence Tunnel is a disused railway tunnel that was built in 1896 and closed in 1952. Since then it has been used as a mushroom farm (very apparent by the equipment and installations inside), but this closed down and it has been left unused since. Its 619 yards long and the majority is accessable except about 50 or so yards that has been paritally blocked off and used for storage.

Every 100 or so yards is a telephone on the wall accompained with a red bulb presumerably to highlight that there is a phone call if your further up the tunnel that you can't hear it. (Because you would if notice the tunnel suddenly turned red!:D)

We entered by the St Lawrence Portal, with the Whitwell portal being the inaccessable one. The floor is coated with sand (something to do with mushroom farming I guess) and the tunnel is very very dry with only the occasional refuge (being carved into the rock rather than being brick built like the rest of the tunnel) having water ingress.:thumb
