Interesting to see this place after such a long time. The last time I went in was sometime around 1996, during Open House - t was the most popular building that year. Back then it was "as is"... no "stuff" like beds, but all the fireplaces were open and obviously there was no protective boarding etc.
It's good to see that they are taking so much care over this, and that eventually the public - visitors to the hotel at least - will be able to see that fantastic staircase.
Obviously the one thing we couldn't do at Open House was poke around in the towers, so that was a real treat this time, especially climbing out on to the balcony to get the clock! And the loft in the main tower... ber-limey... that's one hell of a loft.
Thanks to DK for showing me the route to get in. Not sure I would have figured that one out on my own.
So, a few pics then...
Obvious one to start with
Looking west from the clock tower.
King's Cross in model form...
(Okay, I've been lazy and not done a "proper" tilt shift on it... )
Lots of these lying around...
Midland Railway weather vane, one of four on the spires surrounding the main tower.
Clock, viewed from the main tower looking east.
Entrance to the spiral staircase into one of the spires surrounding the main tower, spotted by DK...
The spiral staircase...
Looking up into spire... there was a mini door at this level, sadly locked. Also we couldn't work out what the rope was for... it led all the way up into the spire.
A lift... right out of "Are You Being Served"...
Looking up into the base of one of the four spires.
Last one... kind of obvious... but hey...
