Hi, Im normally lurking, reading but found this post on Facebook yesterday so thought id share. This was from the Loughborough echo. brief description.

HIDDEN beneath Loughborough’s Carillon Court shopping centre is this little gem – a once popular drinking hole called The Green Man.

The Echo was invited inside the underground pub in March 2011 – and we thought it would be a great idea to share with readers some of the photographs taken.

The Green Man's bar and benches are still intact, along with giant murals depicting scenes of castles and knights.

But the boozer is desperately lacking the one thing a healthy pub thrives on – drinkers.

The entrance to the ale house was closed 22 years ago and its doors later walled up during renovation work at the shopping centre.

At the time, Carillon Court bosses said it would cost too much to create a new access, so the boozer may never be used again.

The Green Man closed its doors for the last time in 1993. It covers the basement under four stores – from the entrance to the Game store.

On its walls are three huge murals painted by artist David Parry which have remained untouched.

There is also a bag of peanuts dating from 1993, as well as scores of empty beer glasses.

Since it closed, potential developers have viewed the site but decided against taking it on.

Speaking at the time, Baljit Kooner, Carillon Court manager, added: “Developers looked at it a couple of years ago, but they were put off by the cost.

“At the moment the pub trade is declining, lots of them seem to be being bought by Tesco to make them into Express stores.

“But I don’t think even Tesco would want to put a shop down there. The whole place looks like a castle inside, the pictures are very impressive.

“It is also pretty clean as well – there are not as many cobwebs as you’d think.”
