Thorpe Lodge dates from around 1800, but there has been a house here since at least 1600, Thorpe Hall could date back to the 14th century. There is a small tunnel that runs underneath road, it was built as a gardeners passage between Thorpe Lodge and Thorpe Hall. The Thorpe Lodge end has been bricked up, the Thorpe Hall entrance has a gate on it which is usually padlocked shut. The tunnel may be a conversion of a chalk mine tunnel, it is faced with brick and flint. There are also rumours that it was used by smugglers bringing spirits in for the inns in this area.
